Katie Wicker, David's sister, often reflects on her proudest moment - watching her brother take to the stage after assisting her in producing and directing a Music Hall segment.
“David wanted to be the Assistant Director, so he could still perform while taking on additional responsibilities. He selected all the music and lighting for the segment, further highlighting his creative talents,” Katie said. Katie has also watched David grow into a skilled actor, though he still struggles with one aspect: showing anger. “That’s ridiculously hard for David,” she says with a laugh. “But he’s come so far, especially after his experience with the Barber Shop group.”

David’s mum, Helen, is equally impressed with her son's drive for independence. “One of David’s greatest accomplishments was pushing to get his own home. He determinedly drew up house plans and refused to give up, until his dream became a reality,” Helen said.
“Whether he's riding his tricycle down the main street to buy groceries or checking weather forecasts for his bike rides, David is always thinking ahead and planning his next move,” Helen continued.
In addition to his work and performance commitments, David loves going camping with Andy from Open Horizons. It is a “boys-only” experience that David treasures. He also attends weekly Genuine Support Services Australia’s (GSSA) cooking classes, enjoys their Thursday night eight ball catchups, and loves dancing the night away at GSSA discos. “GSSA also introduced David to Click Connections, where he is learning to form new friendships and even hopes to meet a girlfriend,” Helen said. The program, combined with the Mates Before Dates app, has opened new doors for David, allowing him to connect with others who share similar experiences and build meaningful relationships.
Through his involvement with Open Horizons and GSSA, David has expanded his social circle, making close friends and creating lasting memories. While his family remains his strongest support system, Helen is grateful for the opportunities David has to engage with the wider community. “We’re a tight unit, but it’s wonderful seeing him mix with other people,” she says. Looking ahead, David’s focus is on settling into his new home and continuing his journey of self-discovery. With a loving family, supportive friends, and his unshakable determination, there is no doubt David Wicker will keep shining both on and off the stage.
