Casting for Connection

For Brian Pilmore of Murray Bridge, fishing is far more than a pastime — it’s a lifeline, time spent by the river brings Brian calm, focus and a deep sense of balance.

Living with a disability, Brian has discovered that fishing helps him relax, slow things down and find his centre, not just by the river but in everyday life as well.

“Fishing does a lot for me,” Brian says. “When I’m down by the river, everything else just fades away. It helps me relax, clear my head, and it makes me feel good about myself. The river has a way of settling me - it gives me stillness and keeps me moving forward.”

That love of the river inspired Brian to create, with the support of Genuine Support Services Australia (GSSA), the Brian Pilmore Classic Fishing Contest, which was held for the first time in 2025.

What began as a simple idea quickly turned into a highly successful, free-entry fishing contest built around friendship, inclusion and enjoyment rather than pressure or competition.
