Passion Leads to Murray River Fishing Competition

Brian Pilmore has always found peace and joy in fishing. Born in Tanunda and now living independently in Murray Bridge, Brian has embraced the tranquil beauty of the Murray River as his personal escape.

"The river has helped me so much," Brian says proudly. "I’ve given up smoking and drinking, and I’m trying to make my life better for the future."

Fishing has been a cornerstone in Brian’s journey toward a healthier life, offering him both therapy and a sense of achievement. His love for the sport and its benefits inspired him, along with his Support Worker, Barry Williams of Genuine Support Services Australia, to launch the inaugural annual Brian Pilmore Classic - Fishing Competition.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, 14th January, at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge, from 10am to 2pm, when a BBQ lunch will be provided, and prizes will be awarded for the biggest and smallest fish caught.

Enthusiasts from as far away as the Riverland and the Adelaide Hills, have already shown interest in the competition, a testament to Brian’s growing influence in the community.

"Fishing has been more than just a hobby for me," Brian shares. "It’s been a way to find peace through self-reflection, and it has helped me stay focused on what matters."

Brian enjoys playing 8-Ball and is also an accomplished artist with a Feature Artist Exhibition being planned for 2025.

When Brian’s not fishing on Tuesdays with Barry (or "Bazza" as he affectionately calls him), you’ll find him engaging in other GSSA activities like 8-Ball Nights, attending Art and Crafts sessions, and recently, Brian even learned how to make sausages.

Brian’s joy for life and learning new skills has deepened his connection with the community. So, grab your sun hats, slap on some sunscreen, and ring 8166 7577 to reserve your spot in this exciting new fishing competition.

(Brian hopes that interest in his Fishing Competition will lead to a GSSA Fishing Club)
